I like this....but we will have to see how long it adds to the upload process. The problem is in the many queries that have to be performed to do the matching of symbols in the schematic to those in our database.

        Hi Jamie,

I think this could be useful. But we're currently discussing what is the best possible approach for this.

Would it be better to integrate CircuitBee directly into your favourite tools, so you can just upload directly from them to the CircuitBee site. This would eliminate the need for library and symbol management on the site entirely, and would streamline the upload process.

The problem is that the upload process is different for each tools, Fritzing for example has separate files for each symbol as does gEDA, while Eagle, KiCAD and DesignSpark have libraries of symbols. These different approaches make it hard to make a good user experience for managing symbol libraries and schematics. We had thought it might be better to just upload directly from the users schematic capture program, either via script, or desktop app or direct integration.

Do you have any thoughts on this?

This will greatly increase our hosting costs, but we can certainly see the utility for users.

We would like to implement this, but since this is all out of our own pocket at the moment we are hesitating.

Please could you let us know roughly how large the files you would like to attach are, so we can make more informed educated guesses about possible costs.

          BenAdminBen (Founder, CircuitBee) commented  ·

          Thanks for the feedback Matthew.

I think you are right in that attachments to a project are definitely essential. We are still in the stage where we're testing out what users want the site to be, but it appears that generally the feeling is that the site should become a project repository. Allowing users to put up all the files related to a project, in which case attachments as you say are essential.

However, since they are costly to us (we pay for 'requests' to download, and for storage space, and data transferred), we're considering a possible paid-for approach. We are thinking about allowing one free upload of up to 100kb say, this would allow for a zip file containing all the source to be uploaded and other useful files like board layouts. Anyone wanting to attach more than one file, or larger than 100kb attachments would require a paid for account.

This would let us manage the costs of the free accounts since a single file of 100kb would not add drastically to our costs, while allowing people to pay to allow more.

What do you think? Obviously we'd have to figure out a suitable pricing scheme, and where the right limits are, but 100kb feels right.

          Hi guys,

We weren't sure how people wanted to use the service up until now, but from everyones comments and feedback it seems people really want a project repository for their work. If thats the case then I think we'd quite like to do as you say Mike and allow zip uploads.

We're really feeling things out right now, so all this feedback is so useful for us. Thanks for the suggestions!

            Hi Jim,

Thanks for the comment, the thing is the 'fullscreen' mode is actually a new page, it should open in a new tab/window for you, so you don't need to navigate back, just close the window.

If thats not working for you please let me know, we'll try and figure something out.

              Wow, thanks for that Paul!

That was really useful and is just the sort of feedback we want here. Searching and categorising and rating are really tricky topics to get right, so we need info like this from people to find out what will really work well.

              BenAdminBen (Founder, CircuitBee) commented  ·

Thanks for the suggestion, can anyone further elaborate on how they would like such a rating system to work?

Would we want to just have a single rating to judge how 'good' a circuit is, or is it more likely we would want multiple ratings so that you can separate circuits in other ways, originality, usefulness, efficiency, etc?

                Hey Boley,

Parts lists are definitely a good idea, if/when we implement board support it will be even more useful still.

Partnerships with parts suppliers is a direction we may head in if people think its useful

                Thanks for the input!

                BenAdminBen (Founder, CircuitBee) commented  ·

Hi guys, thanks for the suggestions...

I assume by parts list we're all referring to the actual specific components used in the schematic?

Would that require us to support board layouts first? Or would it be acceptable to accept a separate file upload to define the physical components used in a design?

The other option of course would be to use the symbols found in the schematic to list possible components from suppliers, regardless of package.

Lots to consider here, what are your thoughts?

                  Hi Jamie,

Yes an API might well be on the cards. We haven't yet had much communication from the various creators of the popular schematic capture tools. We're hoping that will change now that we're public.

If there's interest from them though I think a public API to support importing will be a big priority.

                    Hi,

It appears we do have some issues with FireFox 5. We suspect they are related to the Hardware Accelerated canvas being enabled by default in Fox 5. Perhaps you can try disabling hardware acceleration in the about:config page.

Please let us know how you get on, we are having a very hard time reproducing any of these issues in FireFox 5.

                      Hi,

We're not aiming to be an archive site of schematics, we don't want to control what people upload as thats not the real aim here. This is not a 'front page for your project' type site. The aim is to facilitate discussion of designs, not moderate them.

We will certainly add a section for attachments and view of code and other files as well soon if people want them.

                          Hi John,

You're the second person with an issue in Chrome 14, but that is a development build of Chrome so issues are to be expected, especially since changes to hardware accelerated Canvas are still being made. We are having trouble reproducing these issues at the moment using the latest Chrome Canary install, which specific version are you using?

FireFox 5 has Hardware Acceleration turned on by default, some people are seeing that this actually decreases performance. You can disable it in the about:config page. Filter: /gfx|layers/. That might improve matters for you, though in our testing Chrome has always performed better than FireFox.

We are however going to be looking to improve the performance, and there are some optimisations that we have not yet implemented, so you can expect performance to get better in the weeks/months ahead.

I like that idea, we already generate a small thumbnail, so perhaps we could have a non-frame block of HTML with the thumbnail and the title of the schematic and author details which can be simply pasted into forums that allow HTML.

Of course the other option is for forum owners to enable a BBCode for the CircuitBee iframe. This would be something along the lines of:

                            BB Code tag : circuitbee
                            BB Code replacement: <iframe width='500' height='350' frameborder='0' src="http://c.circuitbee.com/build/r/schematic-embed.html?id={param}"></iframe>
                            BB Code example: [circuitbee]0000000014[/circuitbee]

(Excuse the >< confusion in the above, it appears UserVoice doesn't correctly support this type of text in a comment!)

This allows forums to safely allow iframe content since it will only let you use the BBCode which is then translated into the iframe code whent he comment is rendered.
